Though this year’s BET Hip Hop Awards are being taped this weekend, we won’t get to see the epic performances and hilarious presenters until the show airs on October 15. But that hasn’t stopped BET from giving fans an idea of what to expect when the highly-anticipated show finally hits our TV sets.

The network has announced that it will be honoring rapper MC Lyte with the I Am Hip-Hop Icon Award for her lifetime achievement.

MC was the first rapper to received a certified gold single for her song “Ruffneck” and was a pioneer for female rapping. The “Keep On Keepin’ On” singer has a total of eight studio albums in addition to her compilation records and guest spots on famed tracks.

When she found out about the honor, MC Lyte replied, “I love how that sounds. Let's make it happen."
