Jada Pinkett Smith might be the coolest 42-year-old we know, as evidenced by her punkish new haircut!

The paparazzi probably couldn't believe their eyes as Jada and daughter Willow strode through LAX airport in Los Angeles on Monday, October 7 — Jada's head completely shaved on the sides and her hair braided and/or knotted on top.

Jada made headlines on September 19, as well, after posting an emotionally-bare open letter to her fans on Facebook the day after her 42 birthday:

"I had many addictions, of several kinds, to deal with my life issues, but today, at 42, I have my wisdom, my heart, and my conscience as the only tools to overcome life's inevitable obstacles. I have become a good problem-solver with those tools, and I am damn proud."

Career-wise, the actress — who's best known for her roles in Hawthorne, The Nutty Professor, and the Matrix sequels, as well as being the wife of Will Smith and the mother of Willow and Jaden — is once again voicing hippopotamus Gloria in the 2015 Madagascar franchise spin-off The Penguins of Madagascar.

Her IMDb filmography also states that she has been cast in a film with the title La escribana de uraba, described as a drama about a murder at a major Colombian corporation.

Well, will she get to keep her hair for that part? One can only hope!
