The Taste’s Nigella Lawson’s court saga continued on as she took the stand Wednesday to testify against her ex-husband, Charles Saatchi, in a fraud trial against her former personal assistants.
Just last week, the assistants, Francesca and Elisabetta Grillo, struck down the legitimacy of Nigella’s embezzlement charges against them, claiming that the celebrity chef promised the girls access to her bank account if they promised not to tell anyone about her drug addiction.
But now, according to The Telegraph, Nigella’s admitting that she has done drugs — but nothing that would qualify as an addiction so severe that she would hand over her hard earned cash.
“I have never been a drug addict. I have never been a habitual user,” Nigella said when she took the stand. “There were two times in my life when I used cocaine.”
Those two times? When her first husband, John Diamond, was suffering from terminal cancer and she joined him when he tried the drug to ease his symptoms, and when she later felt “subjected to acts of intimate terrorism” from Charles.
She also admitted to occasional marijuana use.
“I found it made an intolerable situation intolerable,” she explained. “Since freeing myself from a brilliant but brutal man, I am now totally cannabis, cocaine, and illegal drug free.”
Nigella will return to court today for cross-examination.
