When we think Oprah Winfrey, we think of a lady who is totally capable of doing anything, including but not limited to taking over the world. Think about it: there are few women in the entertainment industry who have been more successful or who have managed to build a more lucrative brand — something that has been Oprah’s dream her entire life.
But having children is one thing that’s never been in her plan, and for a simple reason: Oprah’s convinced they wouldn't want her, either.
“If I had kids, my kids would hate me,” Oprah revealed in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “They would have ended up on the equivalent of the Oprah show talking about me, because something would have had to suffer and it would’ve probably been them.”
Besides, having children has never been a dream of hers, not even in childhood — when her best friend, Gayle King, was planning for a family, Oprah was planning for world domination.
“Gayle was the kind of kid who, in seventh grade Home Ec class, was writing down her name and the names of her children,” Oprah said. "While she was having those kind of daydreams, I was having daydreams about how I could be Martin Luther King."
Having kids isn’t for everyone, and it’s a solid choice to stay child-free if you aren’t willing to commit the time and energy it takes to raise them. As awesome Oprah would have been at being a mom — can you imagine the incredible advice she could have dispensed for almost any problem? — her decision was the right one for her.
And Oprah’s advice isn’t going to waste. She starts every day by e-mailing back and forth with the girls who attend the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls — about “everything from ‘I’m feeling lost,’ to ‘I need advice about a boy.’”
Does this mean we can e-mail you to chat about our relationship probs, Oprah?
