Ellen Page may have expected mixed reactions when she came out as gay over the weekend, but that’s not what she’s getting. The 26-year-old actress was met with applause from friends and fans on Twitter after she made her big announcement as tweets commending her for her bravery poured in. And now, Ellen’s offering up her thanks for everyone having her back at what must have been a very difficult (but liberating) time.
“Just wanted to take a moment to say how moved I am by all the support,” Ellen tweeted Sunday night. “I feel profoundly grateful right now.”
Ellen also retweeted the Human Rights Campaign, who sent Ellen their love — and actress Kate Mara, who asked Ellen to be her valentine. Spoiler alert: she obviously accepted.
Ellen shared the news Friday at the HRC’s THRIVE conference with a speech, where she made her official announcement in an effort to make a difference in the lives of others who may be struggling with their sexuality.
“I’m here today because I am gay… and because maybe I can make a difference,” the Juno star said at the conference. “To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and social responsibility.”
We’d say Ellen’s doing a very good job so far!
