Miles Teller may play Shailene Woodley’s enemy in Divergent, but in real life, they’re old pals. And now that they’ve worked on two movies together, Miles says their history is a total asset when they share scenes — especially since Divergent started filming right after their first movie, The Spectacular Now, finished up.

And while Miles has previously said that he and Shailene have a “playful” relationship off camera, the That Awkward Moment star says that the way they’ve clicked is even more beneficial when it comes to working together.

“Shailene and I have a good friendship at this point,” Miles tells People of his co-star. “It was good in terms of doing the scenes, because there was already a familiarity there. We don’t have to BS each other. If we are doing a scene and something’s not working, we can talk honestly. There’s no ego.”

Which is a huge plus, considering how awkward it must be to try and give feedback to someone you don’t know very well. And the down-to-earth Shailene definitely strikes us as someone who takes constructive criticism well — and who isn’t afraid to dish it out, either.

And, according to Miles, it was easier to film their Divergent action scenes than it was when he and Shailene were in love in The Spectacular Now.

“Falling in love is the hard part! Doing a choreographed fight scene, that’s easy,” Miles said. “With love, there’s a lot more depth of emotions than just ‘right foot block, right hand punch.’ The Spectacular Now was a beautiful story. I am always going to cherish that movie. It was so well done and it was a labor of love for all of us.”

Falling in love is hard, choreographed fight scenes are easy — if you need inspiration for your next tattoo, we think that’s a good place to start.
