Let’s give a big Broadway willkommen, bienvenue, and welcome to Michelle Williams! The My Week With Marilyn star is going to make a splash on the Great White Way playing Fraulein Sally Bowles in the first revival of Cabaret since 1998. How is the Oscar-nominated actress faring in her first Broadway gig? Read on to find out!
“Michelle Williams? Give me a break,” costume designer William Ivey Long, who also worked on the ‘98 version, told People of Michelle’s take on Miss Bowles. “She totally reimagined Sally Bowles. Her interpretation is not to be missed.” Hmm, sounds very promising!

William says that this visit to the Kit Kat Klub is going to be “darker and grittier” than others before it, saying it’s “like a sucker-punch.”
Here’s your Broadway 101 of Cabaret: The musical first opened in 1966 and a movie version debuted in 1972. It’s based on Christopher Isherwood’s Berlin Stories and follows a group of extravagant clubgoers (i.e. the Kit Kat Klub) during the Nazi’s rise to power.
This time around Cabaret is being staged at Studio 54, which will definitely enhance the scandalous club setting required of the show.
“As an audience member, you’re part of the story,” William said. “When you walk in, you are at the Kit Kat Klub.” Count us in!
If Michelle has any questions during the process — which, while in previews now, officially opens on April 24 — she’ll have one of the best mentors at her disposal. Alan Cumming will be reprising his Tony-winning role of Emcee.
“We’re more cynical than we were before, so the performances are much more chilling and biting,” William continued. “[Alan] is 15 years older. He’s done so much, he’s seen so much … He was world-weary the last time — he’s even more so now. That’s part of his charm.”
We ask just one thing of you: Don’t tell Michelle’s mama she’s playing such a daring role!
