You’d think we’d know better by now then to put people in a box when it comes to their sexuality, but unfortunately pop star Jessie J felt herself majorly walled in recently after an interview with The Mirror. During the chat, she said her bisexuality was “a phase” but made sure to add “I’m not saying bisexuality is a phase for everybody.”
That comment and Jessie’s honesty has gotten people riled, with many taking to Twitter to claim she’s denying her past. Now the “Who You Are” singer has fired back.
“The hate on my TL is uncalled for and ridiculous!” she wrote on April 8. “I never lied about my sexuality, I never labelled myself, the media and some of the public did.”
Jessie adds she’s always been open about dating both men and women. “Am I denying that…? No! I was young and I experimented. Who hasn’t? Not with just this topic, but anything! It’s part of life! No lies there.”
The singer takes issue with the fact that because she fell for one woman one time she now is constantly labeled as “bisexual.” But it’s not the label she has issue with. It’s the fact she doesn’t feel it appropriately represents who she is.
“I was honest and then BAM it took over, the word bisexual before my name on almost every article I read? Like I had to say it when I introduced myself? It was crazy. Instantly I was boxed.”
Despite the harsh tone of the message and the serious topic it addresses, Jessie ended on a light note: “World’s longest tweet award goes to…”
You say what you need to say, girl! We’re here for you.
