Zac Efron might have scared us all when he got punched in the face on Skid Row in March, but nobody was more freaked out than Zac himself. In fact, he says, it was the “most terrifying moment of my life.”

According to what Zac tells The Hollywood Reporter, he and a friend were driving around, trying to find somewhere to eat and chat that was open late, and ran out of gas, so they had to pull over. And as if running out of gas isn’t annoying enough, while they were waiting for their Uber car to arrive is when the attack went down.

“A homeless guy, or vagrant, tapped on the driver’s side window. Before I knew it, he was out of the car, and they started fighting,” Zac explains. “I saw that [the homeless man] was carrying some sort of a knife, or shank, and I got out of the car to disarm him.”

And from there, his night got progressively worse.

“At some point, he dropped the knife, and I got hit pretty hard in the face — and almost instantly, the police were there to break up the fight,” Zac says.

It’s a good thing the police showed up so fast! We would’ve hated for the situation to have escalated to something even scarier than it already was. But it was pretty admirable of Zac to put his gorgeous, moneymaking face in the way of danger to help a friend.

Kids, we’ve all learned a valuable lesson here: Keep plenty of gas in your tank, and try to avoid scary neighborhoods unless Zac Efron is there to defend you.
