"While Tracy remains in critical condition, he has been more responsive today, which is an incredibly encouraging sign," the rep says. "He sustained a number of injuries including a broken leg, a broken femur, a broken nose and several broken ribs. He had surgery earlier today on his leg. UPDATE (6/7/2014): With Tracy Morgan sadly still in critical condition after the six-car wreck, the driving of the Wal-Mart truck that caused the crash has been charged with one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto.
Police believe that the driver, 35-year-old Kevin Roper, was "dozing" off while behind the wheel, according to ABC News.
Meanwhile, the CEO of Wal-Mart has said in a statement that the company will pay the expenses of all victims if their driver was indeed at fault. "We can't change what happened, but we will do what's right for the family of the victim and the survivors in the days and weeks ahead," Bill Simon said.
UPDATE: Tracy Morgan's rep released a statement late Saturday morning: "Tracy remains in critical condition at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital. He sustained these injuries in an accident that occurred early this morning as one of several passengers in a chauffeured SUV returning from a tour date in Delaware. His family is now with him and he is receiving excellent care. We don’t anticipate much of a change in his condition today but will provide a further update once more information becomes available."
Send your healing thoughts over to Tracy Morgan, who was sent to intensive care early this morning (Saturday, June 7) after a six-vehicle crash on the New Jersey Turnpike.
One person was confirmed dead from the crash, and CNN said seven others were hospitalized with injuries.
Tracy, 45, was riding in a limousine bus with six other people when the accident happened on the turnpike near Cranbury Township at about 1 a.m. Saturday, The Associated Press reports.
The limo bus, two tractor-trailers, a sports utility vehicle and two cars were involved in the crash, but Sgt. Gregory Williams of the New Jersey State Police said the limo bus was the only vehicle that overturned. The cause of the accident is under investigation. "Looks like one of the tractor-trailers may have rear-ended that limo bus,” he added, “but that's preliminary at this time." The New Jersey Turnpike was reportedly closed for more than five hours after the crash.
The 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live star was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Center in New Brunswick, N.J., where he's being treated in intensive care and was most recently said to be in critical condition.
Tracy had a standup gig Friday night in Delaware, TMZ noted, and was on his way home when the accident happened; the site has some images of the vehicles at the scene.
According to CNN, police identified the man who died as James McNair, 63, of Peekskill, N.Y. He was reportedly a passenger in the same overturned limo bus as Tracy.
Tracy and his fiancee, Megan Wollover, welcomed a daughter last year. He has three sons from his first marriage.
We hope Tracy and all the injured passengers have swift, full recoveries, and offer our condolences to the friends and family of Mr. McNair.
