Raise your hand if you’ve been waiting for the day Lupita Nyong’o graced the front of Vogue? We sure have, and today her July issue cover was finally released! In true Lupita style, the 31-year-old donned a figure-hugging colorful frock — Prada, no less — and she looks flawless, y’all!
This has been a pretty big year for the actress, and it all started with her role in the Oscar-winning film 12 Years a Slave directed by Steve McQueen. Her portrayal of Patsey led to several Best Supporting Actress nominations including a Screen Actors Guild award (which she won), a Golden Globe, and an Oscar (which she also won).
“I was really nervous about seeing myself in 12 Years a Slave because it had been such a profound experience in all ways,” Lupita explains to Vogue. “I remember it being one of the most joyful times in my life — and also one of the most sorrowful.”
She adds, “I didn’t want my experience to be a vain one. But I will say that when I watched it, my heartstrings were pulled so tight for Solomon that I couldn’t go into the ego trip. I cried — I mean, I was inconsolable. I wept for an hour after the movie.”
When awards season came to an end, things for Lupita were just getting started. For one, the actress caught the attention of the fashion industry thanks to her frocks that called up every color of the rainbow. She starred in Miu Miu’s Spring 2014 ad campaign, and became a must-see for red carpet occasions (just look at her Met Gala look).
As if that weren’t enough, Lupita’s now the face of Lancôme, joining the ranks of Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, and Penelope Cruz. “It just feels like the entertainment industry exploded into my life,” Lupita adds. “People who seemed so distant all of a sudden were right in front of me and recognizing me — before I recognized them!” That’s probably because she’s just so flawless, people can’t help but acknowledge her.
