It’s been almost a year since we found out about Zac Efron’s secret stint in rehab, but the Neighbors star hasn’t forgotten what it’s like to overcome such a difficult obstacle. Although he’s stayed sober since, he remembers what it was like to need the assistance of alcohol (and other substances) as a way to help him forge his path in Hollywood.
When Zac Efron appeared on Running Wild With Bear Grylls, he didn’t just, you know, rappel down a cliff. He also got personal, discussing how he used alcohol as a “social lubricant” when he first started navigating life as a celebrity — and why he’ll never go back.
“The challenging part was never work — that was never it,” Zac said on the show, according to Us Weekly. “It was sort of the in-between work — the social aspects outside of it. It can be confusing … and pretty soon, you need a social lubricant.”
Totally understandable. Zac was pretty young when High School Musical’s popularity exploded, and that kind of instant fame can be difficult to handle.
“Once it became that, it got to the point where I was caring less about the work and waiting more for the weekend where I couldn’t wait to go out and let loose and have fun,” Zac explained. “But when Monday and Tuesday were difficult to get through, I thought, ‘This is bad.’”
“I just really never again want to take anything from the outside in to feel … comfortable in my present skin, and that takes a lot of work,” he continued. “It’s just meditation and stopping and slowing down your brain.”
It’s good to hear that Zac’s doing so well and doesn’t plan on ever going back to his old habits. Hopefully his recovery continues to go smoothly! And, um, that he also continues to be shirtless during interviews more often. That doesn’t hurt.
