Summer took a nasty turn earlier this season when news broke that Tracy Morgan was fighting for his life after a fatal six-car accident on the New Jersey Turnpike in June.
The accident claimed the life of Tracy’s close friend, fellow comedian James McNair, and for weeks it wasn’t clear how Tracy was faring. He’s since been released from the hospital and spotted around his home in New York City, working to recover what the accident took. As encouraging as it is to see Tracy up and about and spending time with his family, his lawyer cautions us that the actor still has a long ways to go.
Tracy’s attorney, Benedict Morelli, stopped by Today on August 11 and discussed his client’s health. The 30 Rock actor, you’ll recall, is currently in the middle of a lawsuit he filed with three other passengers against Wal-Mart following the June crash.
“He’s still struggling, but he’s a fighter,” Benedict told Today host Matt Lauer. “He’s had issues before that he’s fought through, and he’s fighting hard.”
As for the lawsuit, Benedict assures Matt that if needed, he will prove Wal-Mart should be held responsibility for creating a “culture” that led to a sleep-deprived driver causing the crash. For its part, Wal-Mart has released a statement calling the incident “a terrible tragedy” and insisting “we are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation and working to resolve all of the remaining issues as a result of the accident.”
