Brittany Murphy, who died from pneumonia on December 20, 2009 at the age of 32, will always be remembered best for her role in 1995’s Clueless. But the comedic actress had a dark side, which Lifetime has turned into an even darker trailer for its upcoming two-hour biopic, The Brittany Murphy Story. The film will air on Sept 6, and if the trailer is any indication, the biopic won’t shy away from any of the rumors surrounding Brittany’s death — in fact, it aims to explore all of them.
Copy on the network’s site reads “Brittany Murphy was only 32 years old when she died… but how? Drugs? Poison?... How did this shining star from New Jersey who soared to instant fame in Clueless end up marrying a man who was known for swindling women and spiral into a life of antidepressants?” That’s a lot of questions to answer in two hours, especially since Brittany herself may be the only one who knows the answers.
The special stars Amanda Fuller (of Grey’s Anatomy fame) in the title role, and Eric Petersen (best known for Kirstie) as Brittany’s controversial husband, Simon Monjack, who died just five months after Brittany of similar causes. The trailer can only be described as dramatic and mysterious… and a little sensational.
Words like “paranoid” and “targeted” and “afraid for her life” pop up on screen between random flashes of Brittany’s life. In one shot she’s smiling on set, while in the next she’s crying on her mother’s shoulder (played by Sherilynn Fenn) while sporting a black eye. And of course there are shots of her staring at a pill bottle.
The last shot of the promo shows her husband telling reporters that Hollywood is to blame. The trailer ends with a reporter asking Simon “what killed Brittany?” to which he replies “you did. You all killed her.”
