Fergie has come a long way in the last ten years! During a sit-down with the legendary Oprah Winfrey for an upcoming episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter, the “Fergalicious” new mom talks about her year-long struggle with crystal meth addiction, which left her emaciated to the point of near-death.
The downward spiral resulted out of Fergie’s fear of confrontation when she reached a point of unhappiness with the direction her girl group, Wild Orchid, had taken. However, rather than tell her band she wanted to leave and pursue a solo career, Fergie buried her feelings with drugs.
“So hey, why not try some meth!” she says, in a glib tone only an addict with several years of sobriety could muster. The Black Eyed Peas frontwoman says that ecstasy was her gateway to crystal meth, and that the latter sent her life into a rapid downward spiral.
“It does a lot of things,” she says of the highly addictive drug. “It can make you crazy.”
That’s actually exactly what happened to Fergie. “I went one day into this church, and I thought that the FBI and the SWAT teams were outside of the church,” she explains when relating her rock bottom to the talk queen. Then and there, she says she made a deal with God that she would walk out of the church that moment and, if it turned out it was all in her head, she promised to immediately seek treatment.
Obviously, it turned out the cops really weren’t out to get her because Fergie has been sober for ten years now. “I was actually lucky I went crazy because that made me stop.”
