Fifty Shades of Grey: Charlie Hunnam Heartbroken He’s Not Playing Christian (VIDEO)
Charlie Hunnam shocked everyone by walking away from his lead role in the forthcoming Fifty Shades of Grey film adaptation in October — only one month after winning the part — reportedly because of scheduling conflicts with his starring role on Sons of Anarchy.
Now, the 34-year-old Brit wants us to know that he didn't make the decision lightly. "When you put the time into something like that and a character comes alive in your mind, it's heartbreaking not to be able to play him," he told Life & Style at the Huading Awards at Hollywood’s Montalban Theater on June 1.
"It was definitely kind of heartbreaking having to say goodbye to that character and not bring it to life," he added.
But Charlie’s departure from the project doesn't seem to stem from any lack of confidence: "I felt like I had an interesting take on that character and felt like I could have done a good job of playing Christian Grey. Otherwise I wouldn't have taken it on in the first place."
And even though he'll watch his one-time part played by Jamie Dornan, Charlie is still very eager to see the end result: "If they invite me to the premiere, I will go and see it there. If not, I'll go and buy some tickets on opening night."
