Fifty Shades of Grey: Charlie Hunnam Was Unhappy With Script — Report

Though Charlie Hunnam's decision to exit Fifty Shades of Grey was officially attributed to conflicts with his Sons of Anarchy filming schedule, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the 33-year-old actor had "mounting discomfort" about the project for weeks.

Charlie must not have been happy with screenwriter Kelly Marcel's job adapting the hit erotic novel for the screen. He reportedly sent "very detailed" script notes to Universal Pictures and Focus Features. When those were "well-received," Charlie then sought "further script approval," only to be rebuffed by the studios, the sources reveal.

Charlie is a budding screenwriter in his own right — Summit Entertainment and Plan B (Brad Pitt's production company) bought his screenplay about Vlad the Impaler.

Kelly, meanwhile, created and wrote for Fox's Terra Nova and penned the upcoming Tom Hanks movie Saving Mr. Banks. Universal has since recruited screenwriter Patrick Marber to polish the script.

Another insider tells THR that Charlie disagreed with the creative team — including director Sam Taylor-Johnson — on many counts. Apparently, by the time he left the projects — only three weeks before it was supposed to begin filming — he had been discontent for four weeks.

Part of that discontentment could be all the ways in which Charlie's life changed since he was cast in the role of Christian Grey — he's been the subject of much praise and criticism on social media, Universal deemed it necessary to hire bodyguards for him, and he's has been forced to cancel two appearances.

In any case, we're just glad that Charlie is employed on Sons of Anarchy. Now, if you'll excuse us, we have an Ian Somerhalder campaign to launch
