There’s a lot of moving around going on in late night these days. The Tonight Show recently bumped host Jay Leno for Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert is jumping in as David Letterman’s replacement when he retires sometime next year, and Craig Ferguson is now out completely. But what about the only girl in the boys club, Miss Chelsea Handler?
Not long ago, Chelsea revealed that her show would be leaving its home network, E!, when her contract expires at the end of the year. And it hasn’t been a pretty parting of ways either, with the host calling the network a “sad, sad, place the live.” But until recently, no one knew where Chelsea Lately would land next.
Then, earlier this week, the New York Post reported that Chelsea was close to singing a deal with online streaming network Netflix. According to their sources, she’d already signed the deal, but “the format is to be decided.” This was also coming off of the comedienne’s appearance on Howard Stern, where she strongly hinted that Netflix might be a good place to land.
But when Chelsea stopped by Conan this week, she shot down the rumors that a Netflix project was “definitely” in the works — though it’s not off the table.
“I haven’t made any decisions about what I’m doing,” she told the TBS host. “Everything that’s printed about me is a lie. Everything’s an option.”
Well, not everything. She’s not going to CBS to take over for Craig Ferguson on the Late Late Show. “I would never go to CBS. With my mouth? What would they do with me there?” she recently cracked on Ellen. And the other regular networks are also out, she said, adding, “I would never do that to my fans or myself or to the network!”
In other words, Chelsea may go to Netflix but there’s really no plans yet. Whatever she decides, we’re excited to see what her next chapter brings!
