Cheryl Burke: Dancing With the Stars Shouldn’t Be Decided by Freestyle

It's a week later, and Dancing With the Stars fans are still debating Kellie Pickler's Season 16 win. Did the American Idol beauty deserve the top reward, or should it have gone to her biggest competitor, Zendaya Coleman? Fans are split, and even the pros seem to have mixed feelings, as we can see in a new interview with Cheryl Burke.

Cheryl, who admitted to "kind of rooting for Jacoby" (who she danced with in the Trio challenge), told Parade that Derek and Kellie deserved the Mirror Ball because of their amazing Freestyle. But there's a caveat.

Cheryl thinks the fact that the winner often comes down to the Freestyle is an unfortunate fact of the competition. "I think the last ten weeks of competition should also count, instead of just the Freestyle, and I thought Zendaya was consistently amazing," Cheryl said. "Kellie and Derek’s Freestyle was the best out of the four couples, but Zendaya was just amazing from week one."

While we agree that it's not great that the Freestyle often trumps everything else, Kellie and Derek weren't exactly bad during the rest of the competition. Zendaya and Kellie were both standouts, so to us it makes a fair amount of sense that, in this case, that the Freestyle decided it all.

Do you think Kellie deserved the Mirror Ball, or should it have gone to Zendaya? Sound off in the comments below!
