Children’s Charity Refuses Donation of Proceeds From Tattooed Moms Calendar

Remember that phrase, “No good deed goes unpunished"? Well, a group of moms from Texas known as the Tattooed Hippie Pirate Mommas recently learned this lesson the hard way. They tried to donate the proceeds of a calendar they created to the Children’s Advocacy Center in Denton, Texas, only to have the funds roundly rejected because the calendar was deemed “too sexy” by the organization.

You wouldn’t think in this day and age that a nonprofit could stand to be so picky about where their funds come from, but the New York Daily News reports that the Children’s Center was offended that the moms who posed for the 1950s style pin-up calendar were both scantily-clad and revealing multiple tattoos in their photos. So much so that they told the group they did not want their expected funds of $3,000 to $5,000.

In a statement from the center’s Director, Daniel Lead, the following explanation was given:

"The money was raised with a pin-up calendar that could be perceived by some as sexual in nature, and our Children's Advocacy Center's mission is to provide justice and healing for children who are the victims of sexual abuse."

Although the photographer of the Tattooed Mommas calendar, Curtis Grinds, alleged that the Children’s Advocacy Center has accepted donations in the past from similar calendars by shirtless firefighters and the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, Lead has denounced that, saying that no calendar funds have ever been taken by the agency.

Stacey Willingham, mother of two and leader of the 700-member-strong moms’ group, expressed to the NY Daily News that she and her fellow moms were “stunned” that the charity deemed the calendar too sexy, and expressed disappointment about the decision. The group will now donate their calendar proceeds to two other charities that they had previously voted to support.
