Chris Hardwick on Marilyn Manson’s Talking Dead Appearance, Getting Drunk With Bob Saget

Marilyn Manson’s Talking Dead appearance was so bizarre, it instantly became the stuff of legend.

He was a guest on the October 27, 2013 show, along with Jack Osbourne and The Walking Dead executive producer Gale Anne Hurd, after TWD Season 4, Episode 3. Host Chris Hardwick usually acts as cheerleader/therapist, but he had to quickly shift gears into babysitting/cat-herding mode to stay on point.

Marilyn dominated the show, rambling on and on about ... stuff and things. He mentioned Hiter, ear shapes, bra burning, menstruation, and muttered something about Activia because Carol's short hair reminded him of Jamie Lee Curtis. Or something. He turned the show into Talking Marilyn, or at least Talking Nonsense At Length. Watch some of his highlights here.

"He was doing his own thing on the show," Chris recently told Rolling Stone. "It just didn’t involve anyone else at all. For the sake of Walking Dead fans, I just started treating him like a heckler at a comedy show so we wouldn't go completely off the rails. He's a smart guy, and I think he's used to commanding a room. People thought Manson was drunk, but I don’t know anything about that; I didn't see him drinking. That's what live television is."

Speaking of drinking, Chris doesn't do it anymore, but in the early days of his career, he partied with the best/worst of them. Rolling Stone asked about his days clubbing with Bob Saget — who is not quite Danny Tanner of Full House in real life.

“The alcohol was just kind of a tidal wave that carried you all over L.A. and then you woke up on some floor covered in seaweed and dirt,” Chris said. “The problem is that here there's always a party — or a thing at a bar, an after party, a club, a house rager — and there are some people who are very in tune with that world. Bob and I were just two of those people. We would go out and get super drunk, and he'd end up dropping me off at my house around 2 or 3 in the morning. I don't regret any of it, but I'm glad I don't do it anymore.”

Never mind moonshine, Beth Greene (Emily Kinney) could’ve just spent a night with Chris and Bob back in the day, and gotten it all out of her system at once.

Talking Dead premieres in October 2014 on AMC.
