Christina Aguilera is living, breathing proof that less is, indeed, more. The singer has come out on this season of The Voice in a quieter, softer way. From her attitude to her feedback to her demure style choices, everything has been toned down about the pop diva, and it’s paid off in a big way.

Xtina’s hit song “Say Something” with A Great Big World is the perfect case in point. A low-key ballad that allows its lyrics to showcase its emotional power, it embodies all that seems to be Xtina in 2013. Not surprisingly, she and A Great Big World are being rewarded for releasing this wonderfully understated song, as it currently sits at No. 1 on the iTunes chart. Although the song was already popular due to their live performance of it on The Voice, it likely got a boost from their recent tender rendition of it at the AMAs.

As Entertainment Weekly pointed out in an article yesterday, the AMA performance was certainly in stark contrast to the debacle that was her lip-synched medley from 2012. What was worse was, last year’s performance did little to help sales of her just-released album, Lotus. Fast forward to this year’s AMAs, and the online world was abuzz with adoration for “Say Something” after the performance.

It says a lot about where Xtina is in her life these days. In fact, the newly-svelte singer said the song came to her at just the right moment.

“It came to me at a time when I’m feeling very inspired,” she said during an interview featured on YouTube. “It’s so simple and it’s so quiet and still and steady and, in a way, pleading to hear something … to hear some kind of answer or get an answer in the most humble, unassuming, non-demanding way.”
