“Say Something,” the musical collaboration between Christina Aguilera and up-and-coming indie group A Great Big World, hasn’t just been a godsend for The Voice judge’s musical comeback. The hit song has also catapulted the musical duo of Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino into the spotlight.

So how exactly did the collaboration come to be? According to Christina herself, the song simply spoke to her.

“It came to me at a time when I’m feeling very inspired,” she said in a YouTube video. “It’s so simple and it’s so quiet and still and steady and, in a way, pleading to hear something… to hear some kind of answer or get an answer in the most humble, unassuming, non-demanding way.”

For A Great Big World, life has been a total whirlwind since Christina fell in love with their song. Group member Chad tells E! News that Christina contacted the band soon after hearing the song on So You Think You Can Dance.

“We got a call and were in L.A. like a week later recording with her,” he said.

It didn’t take long before the group was performing the song live with Xtina on The Voice.

“We were touring and we canceled some shows to make it happen,” Axel said. “Everything was happening so fast.”

And while Christina’s voice sounds beautiful on the track, Axel swears she originally didn’t want to take center stage.

“She’s just connecting with the song and singing so vulnerably,” Axel said. “We wanted her to take a verse on it and she’s like, ‘No, I want to let the song be. I want to let it breath and be open.’ We were just floored by the whole thing.”
