Life’s just full of surprises, especially for Christina Aguilera lately! The last week has brought news first of an engagement to Matt Rutler followed by confirmation that she’s pregnant with their first child together. And, as it turns out, both the proposal and the pregnancy were both happy surprises.

A source close to the couple reveals to Us Weekly that the pregnancy “wasn't expected, but it also wasn't unwelcome.” Additionally, though some have speculated that the proposal was spurred by the surprise baby news, Christina’s fiancé had been planning the proposal for quite some time.

In fact, Matt reportedly spent more than a year on the design and concept of his future bride’s stunning engagement ring.  “Every single placement of each stone has a reason and meaning,” People’s sources revealed earlier this week.

The proposal, which occurred on February 12, was just as meaningful for the couple as the ring. “[Matt] wanted to do something that had meaning for both of them,” so he chose the backyard of their as-yet-unfinished home together as the scene.

Waiting until dusk, the insider says Matt presented Christina first with a cherry blossom tree he planted for her, then took her to their gazebo, where, surrounded by candles and red roses, he popped the question.

Christina “had no idea that he was going to propose then,” according to the friend, who says she was moved to tears. Well, yeah! There’s no way we’d get through a proposal that romantic without losing it. Matt is definitely a keeper.
