A soulful star of the early Millennium, Christina Milian has had a successful career in both music and film. Her big breaks came singing backup vocals for Ja Rule and Jennifer Lopez in the early 2000s. Christina’s first hit single was “AM to PM,” which was popular on all charts worldwide.
Christina also provided the theme song for the animated Disney series Kim Possible called “Call Me, Beep Me!” In 2003, her label Def Soul closed down and was absorbed by its parent company, Def Jam. Instead of moving to Def Jam, Christina transferred over to Island Records and started work on her album It’s About Time, which was released in July 2004. This album featured Christina’s most popular song, “Dip It Low,” and offered a more mature, sexy look than her youthful “AM to PM” image. That year Christina opened for Usher and Kanye West, and her album peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
In 2005, Christina received a Grammy Award nomination for “Best Contemporary R&B Album,” but lost to Usher’s Confessions. In 2006, Christina produced her third studio album, So Amazin,’ but left Island Def Jam shortly thereafter, claiming that the label wanted to spend more money on label-mate Rihanna.
In addition to her music career, Christina has also found success on the big (and small) screens. She turned down a role on the Disney Channel’s Mickey Mouse Club to be a reporter for the channel’s show Movie Surfers. She held a variety of small roles on the TV shows Sister, Sister, Smart Guy, and The Steve Harvey Show. Her leading roles were in the films Love Don’t Cost a Thing, Be Cool, Pulse, and the straight-to-DVD film Bring It On: Fight to the Finish.
In February 2010, Milian gave birth to her daughter, Violet Madison Nash, months after she and Violet’s father, The-Dream, had divorced. Milian is currently the Social Media Correspondent for The Voice and is working on her fourth album.
