Watch CJ Harris Sing “Gravity” in American Idol 2014 Top 7 — April 16, 2014

Let’s just put it out there: Last week of American Idol wasn’t the greatest we’ve seen so far. Sure, Harry Connick Jr. put an unexpecting teenager on his shoulders, but as far as performances were concerned, most of the contestants could have done better.

Tonight (April 16), the Top 7 will be taking the stage once again, and we certainly hope they kick it up a notch. Now that the one and only save has been used on Sam Woolf, there’s no room for error to keep the hopefuls from that dreaded elimination. We’ve watched as the contestants have chosen their own songs week after week, but this time it’s a first in Idol history. Tonight, the hopefuls have been tasked with choosing songs for the other contenders to perform. It could prove to be one of the most interesting themes we’ve ever seen... or it could go horribly awry if the contestants secretly tried to sabotage one another.

Next to take the stage is CJ Harris, who decides to go with Caleb Johnson’s suggestion of “Gravity” by John Mayer. Caleb promises that CJ’s going to “take us to church” — and while the judges can’t exactly say it was that good, they definitely have some praise.

“Every week, you’re getting more and more comfortable up there,” J.Lo says. “But you have to start looking for the moments that are going to really lift the crowd. I want you to think about making it exciting when you come out here. That was one of your best performances for me, but I wish it would have gone somewhere.”

“I think you have arguably the greatest gift, which is the ability to connect,” adds Harry. “Whether your performances are really good or not so good, you always connect. Personally, I think that was your best performance to date.”

Do you think CJ deserves to make it through to next week? Watch the video below and sound off in the comments!
