Complex Magazine Strikes Back at Lorde For Criticizing Their Iggy Azalea Cover

Lorde may still be relatively new to the music scene, but it doesn’t mean she’s afraid to speak her mind. In fact, Lorde’s been waging a war on media as she calls out each time she’s Photoshopped. And now, her aim is focused on Complex Music, who recently put rising star Iggy Azalea on their cover after giving her album a bad review.

“Bugs me how publications like Complex will profile interesting artists in order to sell copies/get clicks and then sh—t on their records?” the 17-year-old “Team” singer posted on her Tumblr page. “It happens to me all the time — pitchfork and that ilk being like, ‘Can we interview you?’ after totally taking the piss out of me in a review. Have a stance on an artist and stick to it. Don’t act like you respect them and then throw them under the bus.”

And although Iggy quickly agreed with her, Complex did not — and they wasted no time pointing out to her why her opinion didn’t make any sense. In a dissertation-sized post on their website, Complex gave a crash course in journalistic integrity, since Lorde and Iggy seemed to be confused.

Lorde declaring ‘have a stance on an artist and stick to it’ is a bizarre notion for an organization like Complex, which is to say bizarre for any media organization that claims to have any journalistic integrity,” Complex writer Insanul Ahmed writes. “No one should stick to their opinion when new facts (possibly in the form of new music) are made available that can alter your views. Art and artistry are fluid things.”

While anyone would be upset to receive a bad review on an album they worked hard to produce, we agree with Complex. Just because a website will “get clicks” because of something they’ve said about an artist doesn’t mean that artist isn’t benefitting, too — and if all reviews of new music were positive, how would we know what’s truly great?

Who’s side are you on in this feud: Complex or Lorde?
