Grey’s Anatomy Consultant Melissa Havard Dies at 51

The Grey's Anatomy family has grown a bit smaller: Melissa Addis Caplan Havard, a film and TV consultant who helped the Grey's writers, has passed away from leukemia at the age of 51.

As director of the entertainment initiative of the Office of Smoking and Health at the Centers for Disease Control, Melissa liaised with the creative forces behind film and TV to offer scientifically-accurate knowledge and props for storylines involving tobacco, as Variety reports.

She also spearheaded series of anti-smoking PSA urging viewers to "quit for the ones you love."

Later in her career, her work covered other social issues like sexual health, teen pregnancy, and bipolar disorder.

In addition to Grey's, Melissa helped out Law & Order: SVU, JAG, American Dreams, Judging Amy, and One Tree Hill on the small screen and The Insider, Thank You For Smoking, Coach Carter, Sabrina, Juno, and Mean Girls on the big.

She is survived by a husband, a daughter, and three siblings.

Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and colleagues.
