Back in 1988, the world watched an underdog story unfold. The tropical nation of Jamaica not only threw their collective hat into the Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, Alberta — they signed up for an especially icy sport: the bobsleigh. This is a familiar story to most people, thanks to the 1993 film Cool Runnings.
With the triumphant return of the Jamaican Bobsled Team to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi (okay, they totally lost), Cool Runnings references have abounded. There's some debate about how warranted this is — while the driver of Jamaica's 2014 bobsleigh, Winston Watts, told MSNBC that the movie "opened such a wide way" for him. Meanwhile, Slate's Justin Peters calls the film "blandly offensive," lazy, and a "pop culture punchline."
No matter how you feel about the film, it certainly contributed to the 2014 Jamaican team's fundraising efforts to get to the Games, not to mention the popularity of their story. While they finished last this year — and didn't finish at all in 1988 — they're trying again in 2018, and the world seems totally behind them.
So what about the actors who portrayed the team in the 1993 film? Let's check in on what they're up to now!
