Son of Late TV Star Jack Klugman Slams Emmys for Cory Monteith Tribute
It's safe to say that lots of people (us included) are looking forward to seeing the special tribute to late Glee star Cory Monteith at tomorrow's 2013 Emmy Awards. But at least one person in particular is not happy about it.
The 2013 Emmys ceremony will pay special tribute to five TV personalities who passed away this year, one of whom is Cory. This means that anyone else who died this year will be honored in a general "In Memorium" montage, and this doesn't sit well with the son of late TV legend Jack Klugman.
Jack — who passed away in December 2012 at age 90 from prostate cancer — will not be receiving a special tribute at this year's Emmys. Jack won three Emmys in his career, including two for his signature role as Oscar on TV's The Odd Couple, and he earned four more nominations for playing the title role on Quincy, M.E.
"I think it's criminal," Jack's son Adam tells the AP of his father not receiving a special tribute. "My dad was at the inception of television and helped build it in the early days."
"It's an insult, and it really seems typical of this youth-centric culture that has an extremely short attention span and panders to only a very narrow demographic," Adam continues.
Adam feels that Cory didn't do enough in his career to merit the tribute. "What about the people who should be introduced to somebody like my father?" Adam asks. "I don't mean to say anything disparaging about Cory, but he was a kid who had won no Emmys, and it was a self-induced tragedy."
Earlier this week, Emmy producer Ken Ehrlich defended the Cory tribute, saying Cory's portrayal of Finn was "highly admired" by a "younger generation." The four other people getting tributes are James Gandolfini, Jean Stapleton, Jonathan Winters, and Family Ties producer Gary David Goldberg, meaning Cory — who was never even nominated for an Emmy — is the only one of the bunch to not have earned an Emmy award.
Jack Klugman isn't the only high-profile star to not receive a personalized tribute, as Dallas star Larry Hagman — who died in November at age 81 — also will not receive one.
We think that Cory deserves to be recognized, but we can understand why loved ones of Jack and Larry would be disappointed that they aren't getting a tribute as well. How do you feel about the controversy?
