Cory Monteith’s Film McCanick: The Reviews Are In!

Before Cory Monteith’s (Finn) sudden death this July, the Glee star had filmed two movies: a crime thriller called McCanick and an ensemble drama called All the Wrong Reasons. Both films are debuting at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, which just got underway. And while we had already been looking forward to seeing the films, we’re now even more excited, given that they’re both receiving strong reviews.

In its review of McCanick which has yet to land theatrical distribution Us Weekly says Cory gives a “fine, daring performance” as drug dealer Simon Weeks. “Though Simon is hard-living, Monteith is inspired casting,” Us Weekly says.

“The sweetness that endeared [Cory] to Glee fans still lurks within this character,” the reviewer continues. “And he uses it to his advantage during crucial plot twists. As troubled as he is, you are rooting for him to make it out alive.” However, Us seems to not be less impressed by the film as a whole, calling it muddled as well as “dreary and slow-moving.”

Variety offers similar remarks in its review, saying Cory gives a “very solid, professional performance.” The reviewer feels Cory’s performance is “a sad grace note [to Cory’s legacy], indicating that the star was both able and willing to expand his acting parameters.” But the film itself is “drably derivative [and] infuriatingly improbable,” according to the review.

It sounds like Cory’s performance is the best part of the film, which makes it even more tragic that the Glee star is no longer be able to share his acting talents with us all. Neither of Cory’s two final characters were anything like Glee’s Finn Hudson, and we commend him for taking on such challenging and varied roles. With any luck, it’s only a matter of time before both these films get a wide scale theatrical release.
