Watch: Cory Monteith Tribute PSA — Glee Stars Address Drug Addiction

October 10’s Cory Monteith tribute episode focused on celebrating life. The circumstances surrounding the death with Cory’s character, Finn Hudson, were never mentioned. Finn passed away from unspecified causes. After the months of coverage surrounding the actor’s death of an accidental overdose, this approach felt like a welcome relief. Still, drugs did play a part in Cory’s life, and so it only seems fitting that addiction would be mentioned in some form during the episode dedicated to him.

Addiction was never mentioned in the episode. But right after the show finished airing, members of the cast spoke directly to the camera in a public service announcement about addiction and drug use.

Cory may not have looked or acted like the stereotypical addict, says Matthew Morrison (Will Schuester), but that doesn’t mean he didn’t struggle with a serious and fatal disease. Kevin McHale (Artie) and Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester) also contributed to the PSA with Jane’s message reminiscent of the moving tribute she gave Cory at the 2013 Emmys.

The PSA is short but the message profound. The Glee family lost a very important, very beloved member to a battle with addiction, a battle Cory tried multiple times to win. If anything good can come out of such a loss, let it be the spread of information that, we hope, will keep another family from experiencing such tragedy.

What did you make of the PSA? Was it a needed addition to the episode or just not needed? Sound off in the comments below.
