Glee’s Cory Monteith Tribute a Social Media Hit — HOW Many Tweets?

It’s no big surprise that Glee’s Cory Monteith (Finn) tribute episode last week was its highest-rated episode in a year, as so many fans wanted a chance to say goodbye. But the impact that the episode made on social media was truly staggering.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Glee’s Season 5, Episode 3: “The Quarterback” generated more than 822,000 mentions on Twitter and Facebook. These stats, combined with the fact that the episode brought in 7.4 million viewers and a 2.8 rating in the 18-49 demo, means a lot of people were paying attention.

And that’s not all. The hashtag #RememberingCory was used more than 350,000 times that night, and at one point, seven of the top 10 Twitter trending topics were Glee-related. Also, there were nearly 10,000 referrals from Fox’s Cory tribute site to Cory’s favorite charities, including Project Limelight, Virgin Unite, and Chrysalis. And that’s great news.

So it was a big social media night for Glee, although it wasn’t a record-breaking night. The most-tweeted-about TV episode ever remains this year’s Pretty Little Liars summer-season finale, which generated a whopping 1.9 million tweets. Yowza.

But what’s really important is that the tribute episode to Cory was as emotional and respectful as we were hoping. Well done, Glee. And we still miss you, Cory.
