Glee’s Cory Monteith Tribute: Which Song Made You Cry the Most?

We knew the Cory Monteith tribute episode, Season 5, Episode 3: “The Quarterback,” would make us cry but we had no idea just how much. Each of the night’s six performances brought back memories of Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) and the joy he brought to the world in his too short life. The Glee cast was obviously dealing with their grief live on camera, giving us a vivid reminder of the kind of man we’ve lost.

All six of the tribute episode’s songs did Cory justice and picking among them is a difficult task. But because each song was tied to a specific facet of Cory’s loveable personality, there were a few that had us reaching for the tissues a little more often than others.

The episode began with a group performance of “Season of Love” from the Broadway classic, RENT. Dressed all in black, the cast showed us that Cory’s life should be judged not by how it ended but by the amount of love he inspired and gave during his 31 years.

Then, came the individual cast member performances. First Mercedes (Amber Riley) performed the song Finn sang to his baby-to-be: “I’ll Stand By You,” a vivid reminder of Finn’s tireless leadership and loyalty to his friends. Then, Kevin McHale (Artie) and Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet) sang a stripped bare version of James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain.”

The topic of a friend lost too soon was also addressed by Puck (Mark Salling), who faced his grief by performing Bruce Springsteen's “No Surrender,” and by Santana (Naya Rivera), who broke down as she performed The Band Perry’s “If I Die Young.”

Eventually, we came to the arguably most anticipated performance: by Finn’s love Rachel as played by Cory’s real-life girlfriend, Lea Michele. She covered Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love,” the perfect song to capture the obvious love shared between the two stars.

Each song gave the cast an outlet to process an unfathomable loss and for the show’s characters to say goodbye to their beloved quarterback. Which resonated most with you? Head below to share your thoughts on the night’s songs.

This was a beautiful tribute to Cory and Finn.

I can't pick. They were all so sad.
