Cory Monteith’s Death: Three Ways Fans Can Honor the Late Glee Star

It’s easy to feel powerless when you lose someone dear to you. Glee fans lost Cory Monteith (Finn) on July 13, 2013, and we’ve been in mourning since. It’s hard to know what to do in the wake of this tragic death, but Us Weekly has rounded up three ways that we can all contribute to honor Cory’s memory. And as we saw on the Cory Monteith Tribute, sales from downloads of the songs heard during "The Quarterback" will benefit the first of these charities, Project Limelight.

Project Limelight
When he was young, Cory struggled with his identity and direction. Much like his Glee character, he found that the arts could help give his life meaning. Cory has long supported Project Limelight Society, which helps young people in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside to have a safe place to express themselves.

"When I was a kid I struggled a lot with who I was and where my life was going and what I was interested in. I was fortunate to have the arts inspire me and I think that that's one of the most important things about Project Limelight," Monteith explained of his connection to the organization. "It gives kids exactly that. It gives them the opportunity to expose themselves to arts and arts education."

The organization posted a statement on their website, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the unexpected death of our good friend, Cory Monteith. Cory was an amazing young man with a generous heart. He has been a supporter of Project Limelight Society from the very beginning, and will always be an important part of our story.” To donate, fans can go to Project Limelight

Virgin Unite
Also dear to Cory was Virgin Unite, a non-profit foundation for which he was an ambassador. The group was founded by Virgin Group CEO Richard Branson and focuses on uniting people, government, and ideas to improve lives.

All of us here at Virgin Unite are shattered to learn of the sudden passing of Virgin Unite ambassador Cory Monteith,” the foundation posted on it’s Facebook page on July 14. “We are keeping his loved ones in our thoughts and prayers. In Richards words, ‘Cory was a lovely human being who moved mountains to make the world a better place.’" Cory worked with them to end youth homelessness, and fans can continue to support his efforts at

Last on the list is Chrysalis, which is “a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a pathway to self-sufficiency for homeless and low-income individuals by providing the resources and support needed to find and retain employment.” Fans will remember that the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball was the site of Cory’s first public post-rehab red carpet, when he and Lea Michele (Rachel) attended the event. Donations are tax deductible.

After the Cory Monteith Tribute episode, Lea Michele tweeted to fans, "TEXT CHANCE to 50555 to give $10 to @ChrysalisLA an amazing org that Cory and I supported together #chance2change."

Whatever the way you choose to honor Cory’s memory, we’re sure you — like us — will continue to be inspired by the charitable work he did and the way he impacted people the world over during his lifetime. Do you plan on donating to one of these, or did you find a way to remember our love, Cory Monteith? Share your story below.
