Vampire Diaries Creator Julie Plec: Horror Movies “Scarred Me For Life” (VIDEO)

It takes a lot to produce television content that makes us jump in our seats, but for Julie Plec, it seems like second nature. The Vampire Diaries executive producer is balancing two other supernatural shows this fall — The Originals and The Tomorrow People — so it’s not surprising that The Hollywood Reporter considers Julie to be one of today’s “Masters of Horror.”

So, what scares Julie? “I don’t think it probably gets much grosser than The Human Centipede,” she shares. “I saw it on Thanksgiving. Someone threw it on at 2 o’clock in the morning after, like, 15 bottles of wine.”

But don’t think that’s Julie’s first venture into horror. “That being said, I do remember slumber parties as an 11 year old when My Bloody Valentine came out back in the ‘80s and sneaking R-rated movies and watch for the bloody bodies hanging from the meat cleavers and a decapitated head in the refrigerator.”

Sounds like Julie had a completely normal childhood, right? “As an 11 year old, that pretty much scarred me for life,” she reveals.

Now that horror has a firm hold on today’s TV audience, Julie is pretty excited about the future of the genre. “The beauty of there being so many options and so many channels where you can watch television, is that it’s forcing everyone to push the envelope and to explore ways of storytelling that take a lot of imagination and bold risk.”

“People really appreciate being able to have their horror delivered to them in that package,” she concludes. Yes we do, Julie. Yes we do.
