Ariana Grande on Criticism: “I’ve Been A Weak, People-Pleasing Mouse”

Ariana Grande might face a lot of criticism in her career — most recently from Perez Hilton, who has insinuated that she could be struggling with a drug problem — but she’s ready to stop letting the haters get her down and start sticking up for herself instead. Ariana, inspired by her role model, Madonna, is officially trying on a thicker skin.

“Know what I love the most about Madonna?” Ariana said in an interview with V Magazine. “When a bad review came out, she was the first person to say ‘F—k you.’ When someone said she sounded like Minnie Mouse, she crawled into bed naked except for Minnie Mouse ears.”

“It’s such a good attitude to have,” Ariana continued. “It’s inspiring to me because there are times when I think I’ve been a weak, people-pleasing little mouse my whole life.”

But no more Miss Mouse Girl. For Ariana, those days are over.

“I have to become stronger in this industry,” Ariana said. “I’ve learned over the past year that you don’t have time to chase after every person who doesn’t understand you.”

And in the end, people’s opinions don’t matter to her anyway, as long as everyone who knows her knows the truth about her.

“The people that know me know that I’m a nice girl,” she said. “My fans know that I’m a nice girl. My friends know that I’m a nice girl. And ultimately, that’s all that matters.”
