In what appears to be a vote of confidence, the CW is ordering three additional scripts for each of its three new fall series, which includes The Originals, according to Deadline. Rejoice! The two other shows getting three more episodes are Tomorrow People, which has aired one episode so far, and Reign, which debuts next Thursday.
To be honest, this is good-by-not great news for The Originals, which now will be producing 16 episodes instead of the previously promised 13. If the show were a smash success, it would have gotten a full-season pickup right away, as such breakout hits as Fox's Sleepy Hollow already have. Still, the commitment to extra episodes is a sign that the network likes what it sees.
The Originals has gotten off to a decent start in the ratings department. It debuted two weeks ago with just over 2 million people tuning in, earning a so-so 1.0 in the 18-49 demo. But the ratings dipped only slightly this week, with 1.9 million pairs of eyeballs watching and a 0.9 demo share.
For what it's worth, the CW gave three-episode pick-ups to both of its two new series last year - Beauty and the Beast and Emily Owens, M.D. - and only one of them, Beauty, got renewed for a second season.
Translation: Don't stop tuning in, Originals fans! And know that things are looking promising.
