He’s best known for his former role as lovelorn Matthew Crawley on Downton Abbey, but Dan Stevens is actually an accomplished theatre actor as well as TV star. Prior to landing a leading role on Downton Abbey in 2010, he performed in UK theater productions and appeared in a 2008 Sense & Sensibility TV mini-series.
His beloved Downton character was killed off in a horrific car accident during the Season 3 finale, leaving behind a widow, Mary (Michelle Dockery) and a newborn son. It was entirely Dan’s decisionto leave the show, as he was hoping to pursue film and theatre in the United States.
He can next be seen in the 2013 UK film Summer in February, another Downton-era period piece. Dan will then take on a much darker role in A Walk Among the Tombstones, a gritty US film in which he’ll play a drug dealer — and he’s undergone a total physical transformation for the role. We can’t wait to see where his career goes from here.
