Danai Gurira’s New Play Staged in Zimbabwe

If only we could all hop on a plane together and head to Zimbabwe to see Danai Gurira’s (Michonne) new play.

The Walking Dead actress — and playwright!— was born in Iowa but moved to the African country at age 5. So she considers herself “Zimerican.” The Standard called Danai one of the most successful Zimbabwean stars. Last year, she was named one of Forbes' 20 Youngest Power Women in Africa.

Now she's back in Zimbabwe to oversee production on her play, The Convert, which is opening this week in Harare. Danai recently talked to The Standard about getting more support and recognition for local arts.

"We have the talent in Zimbabwe that can match the international standards but it is disappointing that theater is not fully supported, hence its slow growth,” she said. “For the theater sector to grow, let us not just wait for the Harare International Festival of Arts. I believe it was going to be a good idea if we could embrace the theater culture throughout the year.”

Danai is used to working with an American cast (The Convert recently played at the Wilma Theatre in Philadelphia) but this time the play will feature local actors. The story is set in southern Africa in 1895 and follows a young girl who escapes an arranged marriage and discovers Christianity. Learn more about it here.

Congrats to the impressive and multi-talented Danai! This seems like a great way to stretch her creative skills between seasons of TWD. Season 4 wrapped filming late last month and they’ll probably head back to work on Season 5 in May.

The Walking Dead Season 4 returns on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
