Dancing With the Stars Dance Duel: Pros Anna Trebunskaya, Sasha Farber Disagree With Judges’ Scores

Everyone has an opinion about the judges’ scores last night on Dancing With the Stars Season 18, Week 8 — including past pros. Anna Trebunskaya blogged on the Quarterfinals show for ABC News and Sasha Farber weighed in for In Touch Weekly.

They both took issue with scores given to the couples in the Celebrity Dance Duels. Danica McKellar and Meryl Davis were given 8s from Carrie Ann Inaba and guest judge Abby Lee Miller for lack of synchronicity and some “off” arm movements and timing.

Anna thought the judges were too tough on Danica and Meryl. “Out of all the celebrity dueling pairs, these girls had the most technically packed routine,” Anna wrote. “I disagree with judges. They were able to keep up their timing together and make the piece look complete. Sure, here and there was an occasional ‘random’ arm – one girl would have a straight arm and the other would keep it softly bent – but when it came to being well matched both physically and technically, I thought they were the strongest pair.”

She also made an important point about the added challenge of the women dancing together, unlike the other Dance Duel couples. “Also, their solo bit was more challenging in my opinion because they had to dance without partners, the same exact steps and had a direct comparison because of that. When a male and a female dance together, people do not immediately compare them to each other and don’t expect them to have the same qualities, naturally. But with a female-female pair that comparison is inevitable. I’m a little bit disappointed with judges’ scoring but it’s in the eye of the beholder, I suppose.”

Yeah, that’s a fair supposition. Sasha had a different take on Danica and Meryl’s Dance Duel.

“This dance had a lot of Samba content, which is always great to see!” Sasha wrote. “The one thing I didn’t like however was when Danica and Meryl started dancing together for a solo, I didn’t think the choreography was strong enough at that point. But the rest of the dance was filled with great Samba technique and lots of different body rhythms which is very important. At times, the couples weren’t quite together with each other. Still a good performance from these beautiful hardworking ladies! Always a pleasure to watch.”

However, Sasha disagreed with the judges on Candace Cameron Bure and Charlie White’s Contemporary, which got two 9s from Carrie Ann and Len Goodman, and 10s from Abby and Bruno Tonioli.

“This should have been a perfect score for me,” Sasha wrote. “This dance was filled with so much passion and heart! When Candace and Charlie partnered together and did their section in the middle of the floor, it was so unexpected. Charlie had complete control over Candace as he whipped her around his shoulders and around his back! Candace looked like she was on a rollercoaster having the time of her life! I was glad I got to see this routine, well done to Mark and Sharna for the wonderful choreography in this number!”

We always appreciate hearing constructive criticism from the pros! They know what it takes to do well on this show and what is probably too much to ask. Read more of Anna’s blog here, and more from Sasha here. Do you agree with their points?
