Dance Moms’ Abby Lee Miller to Guest Judge DWTS Week 8 — Good Choice or Bad Call?

Are you familiar with Dance Moms? If so, you probably have an opinion on dance instructor Abby Lee Miller, who will guest judge Dancing With the Stars Season 18, Week 8 on Monday, May 5.

When it comes to reality TV shows, you have to factor in not only editing but stars playing exaggerated versions of their own character. But still. Abby Lee can be scary. So scary, in fact, that DWTS pros Mark Ballas, Derek Hough, and Louis van Amstel have all blasted Dance Moms.

In 2011, Louis took to Twitter to bash the Lifetime show and its featured dance instructor. He argued that Dance Moms should be canceled, but added parents should watch the show just to make sure they “NEVER let [their] kids take lessons from a teacher like [Abby]."

Derek and Mark tweeted similar thoughts of disgust in 2012. Derek wrote, “I'm sorry but this Dance mom show is straight up abusive... Kids Run !!!!!!! It ain't right. Child abuse isn't right. I'm livid right now. Theres a difference between being strict and being abusive... I believe in discipline and a strong work ethic. But there is nothing productive about screaming and making little girls cry over being on the wrong foot.”

Mark had gone on a similar rant just the day before, writing, in part, "Watching dance moms... Anyone watch this show?? This teacher lady is crazy... Completely wrong attitude towards the kids, it['s] embarrassing." He added, "I watched 4 15 mins & switched off, & only reason I wld watch is concern 4 the kids, she needs 2 B fired...#abbeysucks.” When one follower defended Abby, saying, "You can't argue with her tactics because they work. Most of her students end up in broadway," Mark snapped back, "Horrific tactics...correct teaching is patience, discipline, confidence building and love."

And now here we are, two years later, and Abby will be judging Mark and Derek. We’re not predicting too much in terms of fireworks from her. She may even share valid constructive criticism, which we don’t get from pure entertainment judges like Redfoo. But you know DWTS loves its little dramas, so they’ll probably plug her appearance as must-watch, even if she ends up as sweetness-and-light as Maksim Chmerkovskiy when he was guest judge.

How do you feel about Abby Lee being on the show? Is DWTS setting a bad example to even give her this power to judge the Season 18 couples? It’s not like they couldn’t find other dance professionals, like Louis himself, or past pros like Anna Trebunskaya, who critiques the dances each week on AfterBuzz. Both pros are informed and opinionated, but not, you know, scary.

DWTS Season 18 airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
