A great light has gone out. Andy Dick managed the impossible. Not only did he make it further than any comedian on Dancing With the Stars, he took us from “Really, they cast Andy Dick? Eww, no!” to “Really, Andy is leaving? Aww, no!” We love him. We love his pro partner, Sharna Burgess. We’re devastated to lose their warmth, energy, emotion, powerful connection, and positive spirit.
On a more practical note, this shows the trend is holding steady. If you have the lowest score on Season 16, you are probably going home. That’s been the case for most of the season and it happened again on Latin Week 7. Andy and Sharna had a total score of 17, with Sean Lowe and Peta Murgatroyd next above them at 24. Sean and Peta were in the Bottom Two last week, but this week, Andy and Sharna shared the Results Show red lights with Ingo Rademacher and Kym Johnson, who were in the Bottom Two for the first time. Since Ingo and Kym won their Dance Challenge over Sean and Peta, it’s entirely possible that their three extra points did save them this week, sending Andy and Sharna home.
So maybe the best technical dancers are left in the competition, but this show has always been more than a dance competition. It’s a journey — and Andy’s journey was truly inspiring, entertaining, and remarkable. For that, he won, at least in our hearts.
So many people have been rooting for Andy, Brooke Burke-Charvet said after his name was called to go home. What has this experience done for his life? “Well, I’ve talked about it from day one, it’s been the best. It’s just been the best,” Andy said, tearfully, before joking to judge Carrie Ann Inaba. “Carrie Ann, I’m gonna kill you for that 5. What did you do? It was all your fault.” (Congrats, Bruno! You’re off the hook now.) “No, but you know what,” Andy continued, “the fact that we’re here on Week 7 is amazing and, you know, every week I’m like, ‘Really? How, why, how, why, how?’ It’s been the best thing, and I really thank everybody here.”
Tom Bergeron said when he’s out and about, everybody asks about Andy, not just for his dancing, but for all the reasons that he came here. Brooke said Sharna did such a great job and it’s been such a pleasure to have her. “Thank you, it’s been amazing,” Sharna said as Andy kissed her head. “I couldn’t have had a more incredible first season as pro with Andy. He’s given me such a special experience that I’ll remember forever.”
We’ll remember it, too, and we hope to see Sharna back on Season 17. Are you sad to see Andy go, or are you relieved that it was him and not one of the other celebs? Sound off below.
