Fans of iconic actress Valerie Harper were devastated when the former Mary Tyler Moore Show star announced that she had been diagnosed with a rare form of terminal cancer earlier this year. But now it looks like there might be a reason to celebrate!
According to Today, based on recent tests, the 74-year-old actress may have beaten her cancer into remission. The strain of cancer she has been diagnosed with is called leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, and it strikes the membranes surrounding the brain.
“I’d say that we’re getting pretty close to a remission,” Valerie’s physician, told her. “It defies the odds.”
Despite the good news, Valerie isn’t “cured.” The fact that her cancer may be in remission just means that the tumor isn’t growing any larger, meaning it is responding to therapy. It’s important to note that the cancer is still terminal, just not as threatening as it could have been.
“It’s not a matter of if [the cancer becomes resistant],” Valerie’s doctor said. “It’s a matter of when.”
We recently learned that Valerie is joining Dancing With the Stars 2013, so this is just another piece of good news for the actress. She’ll be able to keep her mind and body healthy.
But, for now, life is looking good for Valerie. “We’re looking at Christmas!” she said. We’re thinking of you, girl.
An hour-long documentary about Valerie’s battle with cancer airs on NBC on September 19 at 10 p.m. ET.
