When Kym Johnson announced that she was taking a break from Dancing With the Stars in the United States to judge on the Australian version of the hit dance competition, we were devastated. However, it is an exciting opportunity that would be foolish to pass up and she made it clear that she plans to be back for Season 18.

So, now that she’s behind the judges’ table, what is her technique like? The premiere of the Australian show was earlier this week, and a new video shows how she’s taken to the new role. Spoiler alert: she’s fantastic!

On the Series 13 premiere, things were mostly the same as DWTS — the packages before performances are similar, the theme music is almost the same, and they don’t use the original versions of songs during performances.

When singer Tina Arena danced Contemporary, we had even more deja vu. With the new style set to Labrinth’s “Beneath Your Beautiful,” it felt very similar to Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough’s Season 16 finale Freestyle, set to the same song. With tumbles, flips, and spins, their routine was great — and Kym sang their praises.

“Australia and myself, we’ve loved you as a singing superstar, and now we’re going to love you for your dancing. It was absolutely beautiful,” she said. Aww. Check out their performance and her commentary below!

Kym was also constructive in her comments. When track & field athlete Steve Hooker’s Foxtrot wasn’t perfect, she provided constructive criticism with her own flair.

“Steve, that was such a sweet performance. You’re obviously used to partnering — obviously it’s usually with a pole, but now it’s gorgeous Ashley. You’re partnered really, really well. You move across the floor quite nicely,” she said. “Technically, we could work on a few things. I do want you to work on your frame and your head.”
