Julianne brought much more direct DWTS and ballroom dancing experience to the table, and maybe a wee bit too much personal experience for Mark Ballas’s taste. Cher brought Cher and all of her own personal connections to her songs, but that’s about it — she had no real dance experience.
DWTS probably won’t have anyone else sit in for the final weeks of the season — like Spinal Tap, this one goes to 11 instead of 10 — but it’s something to wonder about for future seasons.
Should they ever bring back another legend like Cher, who openly acknowledged she had no technical knowledge and judged purely based on what she liked, or should they go with someone more experienced? In some ways, Cher represents the average viewer, who cares more about performance and entertainment value than whether someone had his or her shoulders in the right spot or did a lift in a non-lift dance.
Cher wasn’t completely unbiased, since the couples were dancing to the stories of her own songs, but an outside judge wouldn’t have the perceived conflict of interest of a past competing pro. There were fears that Julianne might not be impartial about her brother Derek Hough or her childhood dance partner Mark. One of those fears may have been justified, but a lot of people ended up agreeing with it anyway. Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s name has also come up as a potential guest judge, but others worry that he would favor his brother Val Chmerkovskiy, since he’s tweeted support and voting numbers for his bro and Elizabeth Berkley.
What do you think DWTS should do in future? Skip guest judges entirely? Have guest judges but only ones with ballroom dance experience, like past pros? Only have a guest judge without experience if they’re the fourth judge, with all three original judges in place to make sure Len’s technical know-how is still included? Go ahead and have more guest judges like Cher, since entertainment value is most important anyway? There are so many options.
