Is Derek Hough going to give his fans a Happy St. Patrick’s Day this year, or leave Dancing With the Stars in search of pots of gold under other rainbows?

Right about now, the DWTS pros are waiting to learn their fates for Season 18. The spring 2014 season premieres Monday, March 17, but there are usually a few weeks of pre-show rehearsal time so the celebs and pro partners can prepare. That’s happening very soon.

Cheryl Burke and Mark Ballas have recently done interviews making it sound like they are planning to return, and last month new pro Sasha Farber shared the hope that he would get a callback too. But Derek — Derek tends to be our last-minute man.

The five-time DWTS champion talked to TV Guide about his work with Olympic ice dancers Meryl Davis and Charlie White, and the magazine asked Derek if he had decided whether to return for Season 18 or not. “I haven't decided yet,” he answered. “We're still working things out right now. We'll see. It's just making sure everything's in order. I'm working on a book that's coming out in May called Taking the Lead and I have some other projects going on.”

Yeah, we’ve seen the cover for that book and we can’t wait to learn more! Derek always has a lot of projects going on, and he’s mentioned so many other things he wants to do, even beyond working with Olympians. Heck, it even took him a long time to agree to work with Meryl and Charlie, instead of giving the automatic “yes!” you might expect. “There were lots of reasons — scheduling and the show and other stuff — but I really had to think about it because I wasn't really sure if I could do it,” Derek said. But as he later added, if he thinks he can’t do something, he has to do it. The man loves a challenge, so just give him another one on DWTS Season 18!

Last spring’s Season 16 cast was revealed on February 26, so we’re thinking the 2014 group will be revealed around the same time. Are you excited to learn the official celeb and pro lineup?
