Cody Simpson is an Australian pop star with more than 6 million followers and Justin Bieber as a buddy, but he's still only 17, which means his Dancing With the Stars Season 18 contract had to be filed with the court. So it's on the record and TMZ got a copy.
The contract details are probably similar for everyone in the cast, and in addition to talking about the pay scale, they reveal how much control DWTS has over the celebs.
For example, TMZ said Cody's contract says he can't remove his mic at any time except basically when he's in the bathroom, and he agreed to appear on the ABC shows Jimmy Kimmel Live, Good Morning America, and The View. This one is weird, though: TMZ added that DWTS even has "final cut" on Cody's hairstyle. They didn't share details, so maybe they just mean final say in terms of hair and wardrobe on the show.
In terms of payment, Cody's contract is in line with what we've seen before — a guaranteed $125,000 right off the bat, with more money the longer you last on the show. The bonus caps out at $50,000 a week, TMZ added, if Cody makes the Finals.
The Hollywood Reporter shared the same breakdown back in 2010, saying each celeb makes "$125,000 for signing, three weeks of rehearsal before the premiere and competing in the first two episodes, even if the cast member is cut after the first dance." After that, they get "$10,000 an episode for Weeks 3 and 4, $20,000 an episode for Weeks 5 and 6, $30,000 an episode for Weeks 7 and 8, and $50,000 an episode for the final two weeks." Sometimes the show goes beyond Week 10, so that would extend the pay.
So it sounds like the pay scale hasn't changed in the past few years. Cody does have a pretty good chance of making the Finals, since he has a major fan base and enough youthful energy to keep up with the crazy pace of the show. So the teen could end up making more than $300K for about three months of dancing with a beautiful young lady. Not bad, eh?
DWTS Season 18 premieres Monday, March 17 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
