“I was expecting something like three sevens, so I can't believe we got a 24,” Derek wrote in his TV Guide blog. “For me, scores are irrelevant, but psychologically, the 24 is good for Amy. It can give her confidence, like, ‘Maybe I can actually compete and not just survive.’ And it's great we got a good score going into this week, which is not just our first normal week of the show, but our first normal week of rehearsal ever.”
Speaking of Week 2, they have the Swing. This is supposedly the style Amy most wanted to do, although Derek said the dance announcement at the end of the premiere was “hilarious” because no one recalled ever saying they wanted these dances. “I think what happened was, the producers probably asked, ‘Which dances are you looking forward to doing?’ and maybe even rattled off a list for the celebrities, and not like, ‘What's one dance you really, really want to do?’ The celebrities probably had no idea what to say, like, ‘I don't know. The cha-cha?’ And now they're like, ‘Oh, shoot! I have to do the dance!’" NeNe Leakes said the Jive is actually her husband’s favorite dance, not hers, and Candace Cameron Bure said the Rumba is the dance she feared the most, not the one she wanted. Oh well!
Anyway, the good news for Amy, Derek says, is she “genuinely wants to do the Swing. She wants to go to a club and she dreams about throwing down. It's looking good so far. We've added a few lifts. We do one move where she slides on the heel of her prosthetics between my legs and I catch her. It's kind of scary because that's what she tries to avoid so she doesn't fall, but her eyes lit up when we did it. She was like, ‘That's like the feeling when you're about to fall off something and you get those butterflies.’ It's awesome to see her get excited about it.”
Sounds good! These two are already an impressive pair, and she looks like a natural out there. We can only imagine that with a “normal” rehearsal schedule, their Swing dance will be pretty strong. (Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy also have Swing this week, in possibly another attempt to build a rivalry story.)
Are you excited to see Amy’s second dance? Do you have a score prediction — maybe 9s this time, or will Len Goodman break out his “not my cup of tea” quote?
DWTS Season 18 airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
