You know, we’re fine with just blaming this too on Abby Lee Miller. It may not even be too much of a stretch. She was the guest judge last week on Dancing With the Stars Season 18, and the Week 8 scores determined who went home on last night’s Week 9 Semifinals.
Amy & Derek — 40 + 39 = 79
Charlie & Sharna — 40 + 38 = 78
James & Peta — 36 + 39 = 75
Candace & Mark — 36 + 38 = 74
Meryl & Maks — 36 + 34 = 70
We didn’t know what to do with that mess of questionable numbers, other than to guess that Candace Cameron Bure and Mark Ballas would be going home. Nope! Their fans have been holding strong all season, bless them.
We weren’t too worried for Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy, partly because scoring at the bottom this season has been shown to be almost as safe as scoring at the top — especially if your scores were controversial. M&M’s Week 8 scores were definitely controversial. James Maslow and Peta Murgatroyd’s fans saved them from the bottom before, so no real surprise that they managed to keep Jeta going strong even when they were in the middle of the pack. James also got an 8 in his Week 8 Viennese Waltz, and a low score like that can push viewers to vote.
Charlie, on the other hand, got a perfect score for his Week 8 Quickstep, and it was well deserved. He and Candace were also beautiful in their team Contemporary, but there were no bells, whistles, or dramatic flashes to cue fans to rush to “save” him. It looked like Meryl & Maks needed to be saved, or Candace & Mark, but Charlie & Sharna looked safe up there at the top.
Fans may have just directed more votes to other couples, figuring they were the ones in danger. And maybe they were, without that push for help. But complacency kills more couples on this show than low scores, and Charlie and Sharna’s fans may have just assumed they would be fine. Never assume! Never forget the legacy of Sabrina Bryan!
Are you surprised to see Charlie and Sharna go home? Who got your votes last week, and why?
